What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store, so that the site can recognise the browser on a later request. Related technologies do much the same job by other means: local storage keeps a value in the browser until it is cleared, and a service worker is a small script the browser keeps in order to receive notifications. In this notice, “cookie” is used loosely to cover all three.

The categories we use

Necessary

Set without asking, because the site cannot work sensibly without them. They do not identify you and are not used for advertising.

Analytics

Set only after you press Accept. They tell us, in aggregate, which recaps are read and how people move through the catalogue, so we know which shelves are worth expanding.

Advertising

Set only after you press Accept. These cookies let an advertising network decide which advertisement to show and count how often it was displayed.

How the banner works

The banner at the bottom of the page appears on your first visit and offers two choices. Accept allows the analytics and advertising categories. Decline leaves only the necessary category active. Either choice is stored in your browser under padrecap-cookie-choice, which is why the banner does not come back on the next page. Nothing in the analytics or advertising categories is loaded before you choose Accept.

To change your answer, clear the site data for padrecap.com in your browser. The banner reappears on your next visit and you can choose again.

OneSignal and notifications

Browser notifications are handled by OneSignal. If, and only if, you allow notifications through the browser prompt, OneSignal registers a service worker on this site and stores a subscription identifier in your browser so that new issues can be delivered. It also receives the email address and name you enter into the subscription form. This is disclosed in more detail in the privacy notice. Refusing the browser prompt, or ignoring it, means no such identifier is created.

Blocking all cookies is your right, and the recaps will still be readable. The only visible effect on this site is that the banner will greet you on every page, because there is nowhere left to record your answer.
